Mark Gaffney
Head of Policy, Scottish Disability Sport
Mark Gaffney is Head of Policy at Scottish Disability Sport, where he leads the development and delivery of strategic policy and public affairs initiatives aimed at improving opportunities, inclusion and participation for people with disabilities across Scotland. Scottish Disability Sport is recognised as the lead voice for disability sport in Scotland by both Scottish Government and sportscotland.
With a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in sport, Mark works closely with national partners, governing bodies of sport and community organisations to influence policy, shape programmes and ensure that inclusive practice is embedded at every level of sport and physical activity.
Alongside his professional role, Mark is an active volunteer in sport. Mark was formerly Vice President and Director of Coaching and Competitions with the East of Scotland LTA, supporting the growth and accessibility of tennis across the county. He has also served as Tournament Director for the popular East Lothian Open, the largest tennis tournament in Scotland, helping to organise and deliver a well-regarded event that promotes participation, competition and community engagement across the East Lothian area. Mark is also a qualified mentor to young professionals starting their journey in sport and a volunteer serving four different national organisations. Mark’s combined experience in policy leadership and hands-on volunteering reflects his passion for creating inclusive sporting environments and expanding opportunities for people of all abilities to engage, compete and thrive.
Gemma Lumsdaine
UK Performance Para Athlete, Researcher and Sported Project Manager, Scottish Disability Sport
Gemma is passionate about sport being accessible and shares her experiences and expertise with those involved in the sport sector through her role as EDI Lead for Sported. She has spoken at conferences and events about issues relating to disability and inclusion. In 2021, she was listed in the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 and was named one of the most influential disabled people in the UK. Gemma is currently undertaking a Master’s in research at the University of West of Scotland, which focuses on exploring people with disabilities experiences of sport and physical activity.
Professor Marietta van der Linden
Co-Director, Centre for Health, Activity and Rehabilitation Research, Queen Margaret University
Professor Marietta van der Linden is Co-Director of the Centre for Health, Activity and Rehabilitation Research (CHEARR) and a Senior Research Fellow at Queen Margaret University. A human movement scientist by training, her research focuses on improving physical activity, mobility and rehabilitation for people living with long-term neurological conditions, including acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. With over 25 years' experience in applied rehabilitation research, Professor van der Linden is passionate about developing evidence-based interventions that help people live healthier, more active lives.
